In 1985, in response to the murder of Drug Enforcement agent “Kiki” Camarena, friends and family launched a program that focused on the importance of choosing a healthy, drug free lifestyle. The week of October 23-31 EKES joined thousands of schools across America to Celebrate Red Ribbon Week. The focus was on students making healthy choices. Choices that “strengthen our bodies and increase our brain power.” Students were given red ribbons to wear and red ribbons were hung on the doors throughout the school.
Classroom discussions were held that emphasized the benefits of making smart, healthy choices. Some of these choices included spending extra time reading, playing sports, eating healthier, going for a walk, bike riding, playing outside, and getting plenty of sleep. Students were asked write their personal healthy choice on a red paper footprint. These footprints are displayed in the school foyer entitled, “Footsteps to a Healthy Me.”
On Thursday the whole school participated in wearing lots of RED! The third grade class began their study of Nutrition and the Food Pyramid. 3H was interviewed by the local newspaper about their healthy choices. And both third grades decided to have “healthy” snacks for their Halloween parties last Friday.
Great job EKES! Thanks for supporting Red Ribbon Week!
